My fiancé and I had the pleasure of dining in Kaburaya Matsui and experiencing the Japanese kaiseki, hosted by a warm and welcoming couple. By coincidence we were the only customers of the evening and had the privilege of sitting by the counter watching chef preparing our meal and his wife explaining each plate in detail. They have a monthly changing menu according to the season. It is very well priced and definitely a memorable experience.

Our evening at Kaburaya Matsui was the highlight of our entire trip to Japan. Each course featured high quality ingredients and remarkable attention to detail in both flavor and presentation. We really loved that the menu changes every month to ensure that the freshest products are used. It was also inspiring to learn that Chef Matsui and his wife, Mika, spent 30 years abroad sharing Japanese cuisine with the world before recently opening their own restaurant in Kyoto. The intimate setting, together with their warmth and genuine hospitality, made the experience truly unforgettable. We thank them for this beautiful experience and wish them a lot of success in this new chapter of their journey.

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of experiencing kaiseki at Kaburaya Matsui for the first time and it was amazing! The food: exquisite, the hosts: extraordinary, the experience: unforgettable.
The thought and care that went into the menu was not only shown by the flavors that complemented each other, but also by the way Mr. and Mrs. Matsui presented each course.
They made it feel like they invited you into their home and you are enjoying a dinner with friends. 10/10

Located in a quiet residential area of Kyoto, far from the typical tourist spots, Kaburaya Matsui offers a delightful surprise for food lovers. This restaurant specializes in kaiseki cuisine, and today I had the pleasure of sampling their seasonal dishes for September.
The menu featured exquisite ingredients such as matsutake mushrooms, wagyu beef, fried Pike Conger, and fresh sashimi. Each dish was not only unique but also perfectly aligned with the current season, providing a truly authentic experience. The chef was incredibly friendly, explaining each course in fluent English, making it easy for tourists to engage without any language barriers. I particularly enjoyed watching as he skillfully sliced the sashimi right in front of me and placed it directly onto my plate—such a warm and personal touch!
With reasonable prices that offer great value for the quality of food, Kaburaya Matsui is a hidden gem worth seeking out for an unforgettable dining experience.
Reservations are required 2 days in advance to prepare for your lunch or dinner meal. Plan 2 hours time to eat and enjoy the conversation and presentation. The food is spectacular, delicate and tasty!
Thank you very much for this amazing experience! We couldn't imagine a more perfect dinner! Everything that we had was more than delicious and of course we finished every single course.
On top of that we were the only two guests that evening and had a private dinner experience. Everything was explained to us, we could ask questions and had great conversations in-between the courses. The place is run by a great chef and his lovely wife who lived in a lot of different countries in 32 years. You could see immediately how much love is put in every single dish and that the goal of the two is not only to feed their guests with great food but to have an overall amazing experience.
Everyone who comes to Kyoto should visit this restaurant. We wish you all the best for the future and will of course recommend your restaurant to everyone we know that will come to Kyoto. Thank you so much again!
